EU Foreign Affairs top level representative Javier Solana has set out on a tour of the Middle East, in an effort to settle the atmosphere following the reaction to the Danish caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed. Solana's first stop yesterday was in the Saudi Arabian city of Jedde, where he met with the head of the Islamic Conference Organization, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu. Solana's message to Ihsanoglu was reportedly "In the EU, we have always, and will always continue to, show great respect. Our intention was never to humiliate or otherwise pain the Islamic world. We have no such intentions."

Solana will also be stopping in Jordan, Egypt, Palestine, and Israel during his four day tour. Along with reaction to the Danish caricatures, other main topics of his meetings are expected to be the tension surrounding Iran's nuclear ambitions, as well as the victory of a Hamas-led government in Palestine.
