Prime minister Tayyip Erdogan denied he had told a German daily Welt am Sonntag that “My daughter finds the head scarf elegant and we are preparing to liberate it.” The German Journalist, who had conducted the interview while sitting side-by-side with the premier in Davos, said that he had mailed the text of the interview to Erdogan's adviser Cuneyd Zapsu, who had approved it for publishing.

Speaking yesterday Erdogan said, “I did not make such a statement and do not remember the German journalist who I supposedly talked to”.

So, who is at fault? Christoph Keesse, the Editor of Welt am Sonntag said in a written statement “ I conducted the interview while sitting next to the prime minister in Davos and I published it only after receiving the approval of Zapsu.”

In the interview Erdogan reportedly said that his daughter and wife who wear the head scarf are believers in the Muslim faith.
