In a statement to Italian television station RAI, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke about the murder of Italian priest Andrea Santoro in the Black Sea city of Trabzon last week, saying "The murder which occured in Trabzon wounded Turkey deeply."

Reflecting on whether or not Santoro's murder could be tied to the recent protests over Danish caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed, Erdogan said "Santoro's murder cannot be tied to the caricatures. Despite this though, his murder has wounded Turkey, which is in a crucial position for supporting dialogue between civilizations and peoples, deeply. Our only comfort is that we were able to capture the murder suspect in a very short amount of time."
Noting that Western attempts to categorize certain Islamic countries as "moderate" or not were meaningless, saying "In real Islam, every type of violence is categorically rejected."
