Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan described the bombing of a mausoleum in Iraq – a holy place for Shiites – as, “a provocative incident, in which they are trying to turn Muslims against each other and get them to fight with one another.” Attending a meeting at the State Water Works (DSI) facilities in Kars two nights ago, the PM stated that just as Muslims could not accept the attitude of the recent cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, people of other faiths would find it intolerable too.

He added, “Can you imagine a Muslim, a Sunni Muslim bombing the tomb of an Imam of the Prophet’s family? There is no doubt that this is a serious case of provocation. We love other Prophets as we do our own.”

Erdoğan also touched upon the latest developments in Iraq: “We said this at every possible opportunity. We asked you to be cautious about certain things. 1- You must ensure Iraq’s territorial integrity, through the constitution. 2- You must not allow any one ethnic group to rule over another. 3- You must not allow one sect to rule over another. 4-You must distribute the overland and underground riches of the country to the Iraqi people. We are now faced with what we were afraid of; First came the ethnic clashes and now clashes between different sects.” Erdoğan reminded listeners that the next between Foreign Ministers (which had taken place in Iraq several times) would be held in Iran.
