WASHINGTON - Turkey's AKP is considering establishing an EU ministry in a move to give a new impetus to the accession process, a party official said on Monday. The ministry could be a new one or a state ministry could translate into an EU affairs ministry.

Turkey's ruling AKP Deputy Chairman Saban Disli told reporters in Washington this regulation couldn't be made immediately. ''We are waiting for the crisis to end. This issue will be discussed whenever the crisis is over," he added implying the AKP closure case.

The EU has opened six chapters in Turkey's accession negotiations, which started in 2005. The EU suspended negotiations in eight policy chapters because of Turkey's refusal to open its ports to Greek Cypriot vessels. The EU has long criticized the government for the stalled reform process.

Turkey's Constitutional Court decided on March 31 to examine an indictment prepared by the chief prosecutor, who claimed the AKP became the "focal point of anti-secular activities" and demanded its closure.
