ISTANBUL - Turkish squads have rescheduled their return from the Mediterranean Games due to organizational problems, the head of the General Directorate of Youth and Sports, Yunus Akgül, declared yesterday.

The teams will leave the host town of Pescara, Italy, beginning tomorrow when they finish participating, announced Akgül, saying that they were forced to change initial plans to return July 6, when events officially end.

On Friday, the opening day of the events, Akgül has announced considering mulling from the events, saying athletes "cannot find a place for trainingÉ the accommodation facilities are terrible. Some of the rooms do not even have curtains." The Organization Committee acted to meet some of the Turkish squads’ demands, and Turkey decided to stay in Pescara.

"Some problems were solved, but some stay on," said Akgül yesterday. "Turkish squads will return to the country in four groups on June 30, and July 2, 4 and 6."

Turkey’s decision to battle on instead of withdrawing from the tournament paid back duly, as the country is currently topping the medals chart.

Turkish athletes have won eight gold medals, two more than second place Italy, in addition to two silver and seven bronze.

Turkey sits second behind Italy in total number of medals won.
