ISTANBUL - Beşiktaş Cola Turka’s women’s basketball team was hit with the news that Israeli guard Shay Doron left the team due to worries about her personal safety amid the anti-Israeli protests in Turkey, the daily Hürriyet reported yesterday.

Doron he had been paid the majority of her yearly wage, the club said. Speaking to Hürriyet, a Beşiktaş board member confirmed that the growing reaction towards Israel’s deadly attacks in Gaza was a main concern on Doron’s side.

"I talked to her on the telephone and she told me that she was afraid of having any trouble in Turkey, where there are many protests against her country," Şeref Yalçın, a Beşiktaş board member in charge of basketball, was quoted as saying in the daily. "I told her that she needed to get used to that, as there were similar protests all over the world, not only in Turkey."

The Anatolia News Agency reported that Doron agreed to terms with an Israeli club, but Yalçın asserted that the player would have to return to the Istanbul-based Beşiktaş Cola Turka. "She was on a deal of $140,000 per year, and $85,000 of that contract was paid," said Yalçın. "Our club has served its financial responsibilities and told her that we will not let her sign to another club if she does not return."

The club also issued a statement saying it would apply to the world basketball’s governing body FIBA to conclude the dispute.
