We do not think that any news you read today will be as important as the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) decision taken yesterday (Thursday).

Haberin Devamı

That is because an unbelievable European duplicity exists.

They try to present themselves as the so-called "democracy" protectors.

But in fact they are burying this country's democracy. They attack and heavily pressure the Constitutional Court, which they are unable to claim is "not independent" and for which they fail to find "irregularities" in its processing and implementation of laws.

And they do this in the name of so-called "law".

PACE discussed the "Functioning of Democratic Institutions in Turkey" report prepared by Belgian MEP Luc Van den Brande in its general assembly yesterday. As you can guess, the report was prepared to intervene in the ongoing closure case filed against the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

Because all Europe, including the PACE world, are fully satisfied with Turkey's ruling party. Contrary to what they think, even the “d” from “democracy” is not present in the internal functioning administration of the AKP.

As we said before, the real issue here is the pressure placed on the constitutional court on behalf of PACE and the blocking of the closure of AKP by intimidating the court.

As a matter of fact they decided "to consider putting Turkey back on the list of states it considers need monitoring, if necessary" thinking that they could frighten both the court and all of us.

They are attempting to imply: In the case of the AKP's closure, they will undertake an investigation to assess if democracy is working in Turkey. What is more they say, if necessary, we can open the continuation of your European Commission membership to discussion.

After these statements, one quickly wants to respond by saying, "If you want to open it to discussion, just go ahead! Your decisions are worthless to us if we continue to obey the law and to uphold the backbone of our democracy and secular system.

But this time they haven't limited their threat to that point and also added the statement that it does not count the European Court of Human Rights ruling in the cases relating to the Welfare Party and Leyla Sahin.

There they had stated, "The European Commission (EC) strongly supports the secular states among its members. But since religious based parties are common in its member countries, taking this into consideration, the EU thinks that such parties can not be asked to be secular. It is possible to file a case against the ruling religious party's decision taken regarding amendments to the constitution but a case cannot be filed against that party for taking the decision to make the change."

Turkey has been a member of the European Commission since 1950.

So, after all this time, do these people still not know that secularism is the backbone of the Turkish Constitution and of Turkey's democracy, and that if and when it is broken, democracy and all the contemporary values of the past 60 years will fade away.
