Turkeys National Security Council discusses terror and energy issues

The meeting of National Security Council (MGK) discussed operations and the measures of security forces against the PKK; recent developments in Iraq; and the measures officials would take regarding the rising energy demand of Turkey, the MGK Secretariat General said late Thursday in a statement released after the meeting.

The meeting of the MGK, which convened under the chairmanship of President Abdullah Gul, ended in Ankara late on Thursday.

The council said successful operations against the PKK as well as measures which were taken regarding fight against terrorism would be pursued.

The council members assessed the results of meetings, which were held with Iraqi officials as well as groups and formations in Iraq, said the statement, adding Turkey would help the settlement of stability in Iraq and the region.

The council members also discussed policies regarding Turkey's energy security.     Â

To counter the growing demand for energy, the council focused on ways to maximize the benefits of domestic and renewable energy resources, increase cooperation with neighboring countries, and also Turkey's role as an energy passage country, the statement said.Â
