ISTANBUL - The global financial crisis will not cause any delays in transportation investment, to the contrary, the government will increase its investment in the industry by 11 percent.

"This year, we will invest 300 million Turkish liras in developing air transportation," said Binali Yıldırım, minister for transportation.

"We will make additional investments in five existing airports and construct three new ones. The new airports will include a third airport in Istanbul, one in the Kütahya-Afyon-Uşak area and another one in the Çukurova region," Yıldırım said during a meeting held over the weekend by the Economy Journalists Association, or EGD.

"As the Transportation Ministry, we have provided 60 billion liras to the Turkish Republic over the past six years. Meanwhile, we have used only 30 billion liras from the budget. We have built highways, railways, airports and harbors," Yıldırım said.

Marmaray, a rail tunnel running under the Bosphorus Strait, once completed, will help nearly 1.5 million Istanbul residents travel each day from Anatolia to Trace or vica versa, said Yıldırım. The construction of a high-speed train that will provide transportation between Eskişehir and Ankara will be completed by the end of the year, he added.
