ISTANBUL - Aiming to increase competitiveness in Turkey's private sector, the leading organizations of Turkey's business circles plan to establish "Regional Innovation Centers" in Turkey’s seven different regions. The centers are planned to act as sector-focused innovation interfaces.

Within the framework of the project, regional innovation centers will coordinate with universities, research institutions, public and private enterprises and non-governmental organizations in various regions, to increase competitiveness through an innovation network.

While the culture of innovation is not well-developed in Small and Medium Size Enterprises, or SMEs, the regional innovation centers "will focus on enabling SMEs to renew themselves, to diversify the production and to focus on value added products," Celal Beysel, chairman of the Turkish Enterprise and Business Confederation, or TÜRKONFED, said yesterday.

"When SMEs switch to value added production, enhance their capacities and exports, this will result in improvement of the lifestyles of the employees with better incomes and increase in employment and wealth as well as fostering the entrepreneurship spirit," said Beysel.

The project is the brainchild of the Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association, or TÜSİAD, TÜRKONFED, TÜSİAD-Sabancı University Competitiveness Forum, or REF, and the National Innovation Initiative.
