Four of five lieutenants and one military student, who have been under custody since Thursday, were officially placed under arrest as part of the Ergenekon probe on late Saturday. A court also ruled to release a retired general earlier detained under the investigation due to his deteriorating health on Sunday. (UPDATED)

One of the five lieutenants being held in custody was released.

 

Fifteen people, including a well-known actress, Nurseli Idiz, the former head of a nationalist organization Levent Temiz, and and Seyhan Soylu, an artist manager, were also taken into custody as part of a series of detainments in five provinces across the country in the controversial Ergenekon operation on Thursday.

 

Temiz, Idiz and Soylu appeared in court on Sunday, Dogan News Agency reported. Eight people had been also detained in the Turkish capital of Ankara.

A RETIRED GEN TO BE RELEASED

A Turkish court has ruled for the release of retired general Sener Eruygur, due to his deteriorating health, Dogan News Agency reported citing Eruygur's lawyer on Sunday.

 

Erguygur was rushed to hospital on Wednesday suffered he a cerebral hemorrhage after collapsing and falling down stair while being detained in prison.

 

He was imprisoned under a wave of detainments as part of the Ergenekon probe on July 1. A number of Turkey’s anti- ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) politicians, journalists, intellectuals and retired generals have been detained in the Ergenekon investigation.

 

The Ergenekon operation, which started in June 2007 with the discovery of grenades in a house in Istanbul’s Umraniye district, is allegedly a crackdown on an illegal organization believed to be planning provoking events that would pave the way for a military coup to overthrow the ruling AKP government.

 

The detainees will be charged with a number of crimes including “forming an armed terrorist organization, being a member of a terrorist organization, and aiding the organization.”

The 2455-page "Ergenekon" indictment has been filed at an Istanbul court, indicting 86 people, 47 of who are being held in custody.
