İZMİR - One of the world’s oldest ancient cities, Ephesus, is being considered for upgraded status on UNESCO’s cultural-heritage protection list.

Currently on the international body’s temporary list, Ephesus will be studied by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the İzmir Development Agency, which will prepare a protection plan and deliver it to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO.

İzmir Governor Mustafa Cahit Kıraç, noting that the city has a history spanning 8,500 years, said: "Ephesus should be on the UNESCO list and should be officially registered. Beside Ephesus, there are a lot of historical sites in the city that deserve to be on this list. But we want to take the first step with ancient Ephesus."

Kıraç said that the city would work with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to prepare the plan. "We will undertake the financial dimension of the preparation of the plan," he said. "It is very important, both for İzmir and Turkey, to be on this list."

Cultural Heritage and Museums General Manager Orhan Düzgün said that Anatolia is very rich in terms of cultural heritage and noted that there are already nine historical sites in Turkey on UNESCO’s list. Ephesus would be the tenth.

Since 2000, it has been compulsory to make a plan, including environmental arrangements and an executive committee, for each candidate historical site. "There are 23 historical sites from Turkey on the temporary list right now," Düzgün said.
