Rock-throwing teens given stiff sentences

ADANA - Twenty-two minors have received prison sentences following incidents during Nevruz demonstrations in Adana.
Eleven minors aged 12-17 were sentenced to 3.5 to four years and six months for damaging police riot shields and another 11 children received sentences ranging from four years and three months to six years and four months.
Eleven children were detained in the southern city of Adana on March 21, 2008, during two separate unsanctioned demonstrations in the city. The children were accused of chanting slogans in favor of the jailed leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, Abdullah Öcalan, and throwing rocks at the police. One policeman was injured in the demonstrations.
The seventh branch of the Adana Court for Serious Crimes issued its ruling Tuesday in the case sentencing the 11 minors to lengthy prison terms.
The 11 minors were charged with committing crimes on behalf of the PKK, carrying out propaganda for the PKK and inflicting injury.
The court sentenced seven of the minors aged 16-17 to prison terms of four years, eight months and 20 days each. The remaining four, aged 12-15, were sentenced to three years, six months and 15 days each on the same charges.
The sixth branch of the Adana Court for Serious Crimes, bestowed with special powers, also issued its ruling in regard to an incident on March 22, 2008, in Adana, where 11 minors were charged with barricading a road, burning tires and chanting slogans in favor of the PKK. The court sentenced five of the minors aged 15-17 to prison terms of five years and eight months on the charges of committing a crime on behalf of the PKK and disseminating PKK propaganda. The other six minors were sentenced to prison terms ranging from six years and four months to four years and three months. Heavy prison terms for children causes reaction from the society.
