ANKARA - A Republican People’s Party, or CHP, deputy said 11 vehicles with laser eavesdropping systems were the sources for the wiretapping records that were recently broadcast by the media, daily Hürriyet reported yesterday.

"Two of these vehicles are at the disposal of a team that is under the authority of the Prime Ministry," said CHP deputy Ahmet Ersin, who is also a member of the Parliamentary Wiretapping Subcommittee.

Laser eavesdropping technology enables conversations to be taped without the need to install bugs on targets’ communication devices.

İzmir deputy Ersin said he knew the vehicles were being used to serve the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP’s, benefit. "I learned that the vehicles were imported from Canada and Israel in 2005, but could not get the addresses of where these vehicles were delivered," he said.

"We wanted to learn the addresses of the vehicles from the State Ministry responsible for customs, but they ended their inquiry over the matter in panic," he said, adding that he tabled a motion over the issue but could not get reply. "Upon my second motion, I was told that the identities of those who imported the vehicles are confidential," Ersin said. Emphasizing that the vehicles could eavesdrop from a great distance away from their target, Ersin said they were wandering around like "floating mines." It is uncertain when or on whom they will execute, he said.

"I think the eavesdropping is performed by a special intelligence team that was founded by the prime minister in 2005," Ersin said. He said the unit is composed of inspectors and members of the police and that it benefits from religious order members within the National Intelligence Organization, or MIT, and operates as a special intelligence unit.

CHP Ankara deputy Yılmaz Ateş also submitted a parliamentary query to the prime minister in relation to the eavesdropping cases. Ateş asked how the media acquired the wiretapping records and how many investigations were launched in relation to the records of conversations that were leaked to the media.
