ANKARA - Turkey commemorated its martyrs and the 94th anniversary of its naval victory in the Battle of Gallipoli yesterday. "Turkey will never forget its martyrs who have turned into a symbol of self-sacrifice and become immortalized in the hearts of the people," President Abdullah Gül said in his written statement.

The Turkish nation and its people achieved the impossible, disregarding their own lives, said Gül. "Çanakkale (Dardanelles) is a monument of honor, pride, glory and liberty with our thousands of martyrs lying in the city’s heart," Gül said.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan defined the Çanakkale naval victory as "one of the greatest acts of heroism witnessed by Anatolia," speaking in Çanakkale. Erdoğan said the Turkish nation would always stay independent. "This nation did not obey any other nation in the past, neither will it today. Today, we seek not conflict, but dialogue and consensus. That is why Turkey preserves its determination to enter the EU. It seeks peace in the Balkans, Caucasus, Middle East, and Africa," said Erdoğan.
