ISTANBUL - The Culture and Tourism Minister said he is optimistic for Istanbul tourism in the year ahead. Speaking at an annual Touristic Hotels and Investors Association, or TUROB, luncheon, Minster Ertuğrul Günay said Istanbul is the third most visited city in Europe.

"Rome, Barcelona and Berlin are behind us. Paris and London are ahead of us. But once we overcome the crisis, I sincerely hope that we will be able to move ahead of Paris and London," Günay said. "Starting with Suru Sultani, the historic peninsula, we are trying to make every street and every corner in Istanbul a joy to visit. I believe that in 2010, Istanbul will have 10 million tourists and I am hoping the city will make $10 billion," said Günay.

He also said the World Water Forum in March is expected to draw a large crowd and that work on the event’s venue, the Sütlüce Conference Center, is ongoing.
