ANKARA - Police Special Operations Chief Behçet Oktay killed himself in his car yesterday. The exact reason for the suicide is unknown, but there were reports that he was upset about a new appointment to his post.

Interior Ministry officials denied that Oktay was removed from his office. A retired police chief, said to be in the car when Oktay killed himself, was taken to the Homicide Bureau. Operations officers under arrest in the Ergenekon case had reportedly said Oktay asked them to take good care of their former chief İbrahim Şahin, himself under arrest as an Ergenekon suspect.

Oktay’s name was also mentioned in the formation of "S-1" anti-terror teams, a new security unit according to Şahin’s testimony. Special senior police officers in Ankara flocked to the hospital, where Oktay’s body was taken.

Police Chief Oğuz Köksal said the death of Oktay, "a hero," is a tragic event, speaking at the ceremony held at the Police headquarters in Ankara. " His dream was to build the best special operations training center in the world." Köksal said. "I want to say that such an end for a hero, at the end of a short period of depression, is not appropriate. He was a rare talent," Köksal said.

Other reports suggested that Oktay demanded resignation from his superiors when claims surfaced that he had links with Şahin, according to Hurriyet.com.tr.
