Turkish Journalists’ Society (TGC) said the unfair tax fine imposed on the Dogan Media Group is a dangerous way of silencing the press organs that the government dislikes.

The Turkish Treasury imposed late on Tuesday a half-billion-dollar levy against the Dogan Media Group, parent company of Hurriyet, as the government effectively carries its war against the media to a new level. The group will take the issue to the court.  Â

"Mr. Prime Minister's anger caused by the news stories he disliked has turned into a concrete attempt to silence (media) with the extremely high tax levy imposed on the Dogan Media Group," a statement from TGC said.

The TGC believes that this incident is a concrete evidence of the discomfort towards the different views, the statement added.
