Poll shows opposition candidate leads election race in Turkish capital

The candidate of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) slightly leads the election race against the leading party's nominee in the Turkish capital Ankara, a poll showed on Saturday.

According to the poll, with the undecided voters distributed, 38.87 percent of the respondents said the will vote for the CHP's candidate Murat Karayalcin, while 38.08 percent said they support ruling Justice and Development Party's (AKP) candidate Melih Gokcek.

 

The poll conducted by the research company SONAR and 2,700 people responded.

 

The company said 22.2 percent of the voters remain undecided.

 

Turkey will hold local elections on March 29. The opposition sees the elections as an opportunity to regain the power in the larger provinces like Istanbul and Ankara from the decade-long Islamist party rule amid growing economic uneasiness.
