ISTANBUL - There are many stray cats and dogs living on the streets of Istanbul, even geese stalk the city’s fish markets. In an attempt to control the situation, the Istanbul Büyükşehir Municipality Health and Social Service Department will keep track of animals using transponder chips tagged to their ears.

The project "Rehabilitation works of street animals," will take care of 16,000 street animals in Istanbul. As a first step in the project, animals will be treated for diseases and tagged with microchips.

The Health and Social Service Department Office’s vet service department launched the project of tagging street animals with microchips in 2006. Since then, 15,952 street dogs have been tagged. Vaccination dates, information about treatments and the areas in which they live, are recorded in the system with the help of microchips the animals carry under their skin.

Animal rehabilitation centers are located in Tuzla and Hasdal. There are 12 people who pick animals from the streets for tagging and there are 10 vets.

When a street animal is brought to a center, this information can be seen electronically.

The team is responsible for treating, sterilizing and therapy for the animals. After any surgery animals are kept in captivity for a period of time then released back into the area in which they live.

During last year, 6,203 dogs were tagged and 6,321 were sterilized. From 2004 to 2008, 29,591 treatments were given, 19,742 sterilization operations took place, 24,798 animals were vaccinated and 3,839 were given to people who wanted to take care of them as pets.
