Turkey’s education minister target of failed shoe throwing protestA protester in Turkey attempted to throw his shoe at the country’s Education Minister as he delivered a speech in the eastern province of Van on Wednesday. The protest echoes a similar attack on the former U.S. president in Baghdad in December. (UPDATED)

Police and members of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) prevented the man from throwing his shoe at Education Minister Huseyin Celik, Dogan News Agency reported.

The man, reportedly a cobbler by trade, said he undertook the protest because his business has been struggling to survive. He was immediately detained after the incident.

Speaking at an ceremony to introduce the ruling AKP's provincial candidates for the coming March 29 elections, Celik ignored the protest and carried on without mention of the incident.

An Iraqi reporter threw his shoes at former President George W. Bush during a news conference in Baghdad in December. The journalist was hailed as a hero by many as video footage of the incident circulated around the world.

In a similar incident, a man was charged earlier this week after a shoe was thrown at Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao during a speech on the global economy. The shoe missed Wen and landed on the stage about a meter away from him during an address at Britain’s Cambridge University.
