İZMİR - A historic movie theater burned to ashes in İzmir over the weekend. The reason for the fire is not known but the 50-year-old movie theater is in ruins. The physical damage is huge, but fortunately no one was hurt.

When the fire started at 10 p.m. on Sunday on Eşrefpaşa Avenue, the movie theater was not open. Saray Sineması closed at 8 p.m. after the last matinee. The locals who realized fire was coming out of the theater building called the fire department. The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality firefighters arrived on the scene in a short time, but the building was already covered in smoke.

During the extinguishing work, the roof and the front part of the building collapsed with a boom. Landlord Mehmet Süner, 55, was shocked when he came to see the situation. He stood there watching the firefighters try to handle the situation. After an hour and a half the fire was put out.

Nothing left from archives
Thousands of film archives are now nothing but ashes and most of the building has been destroyed. Policemen, who are now investigating the reason for the fire, took the security guard Tahir Akıll into custody. The municipality has decided to demolish the rest of the structure to make way for something new.
