ANKARA - As the calls for a cease-fire in Gaza fall on deaf ears despite the mounting civilian deaths, a group of first ladies will gather Saturday in a summit in Istanbul seeking an immediate truce to the fighting and and aid for the Palestinian people.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s wife, Emine Erdoğan, invited France’s first lady, Carla Bruni, Spain’s Sonsoles Espinosa, Syria’s Esma Esat, Jordan’s Queen Raina Al Abdullah, the Lebanese president’s wife, Vefa Süleyman, Azerbaijan’s Mihriban Aliyev, Morocco’s Queen Lalla Selma and Qatar’s Queen Sheikha Mozah to the summit, pointing to the human tragedy in the region. The first ladies of Syria, Morocco, Lebanon, Qatar and Jordan confirmed they would attend the summit, sources said. If there does not appear to be a last minute change in her program, Bruni will also participate.
