Turkey to continue diplomatic efforts on Gaza issue - prime minister

Turkey will continue its ongoing diplomatic efforts in a bid to solve the Gaza issue which escalated recently, Turkish Prime minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday following his brief visit to countries in the region. (UPDATED)

"We are exerting every diplomatic effort to end the ongoing problems. We will continue this effort," Erdogan said on after meeting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and King Abdullah of Jordan on his Middle East tour as part of efforts to end Israel's offensive against Gaza

 

Erdogan also said they should continue these efforts adding that Turkey had a historical mission, and they would maintain this.

 

Erdogan also met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Jordan

 

The talks were very fruitful Erdogan had told reporters as he returned in Ankara. "We told our brothers that Turkey would be involved in any kind of efforts or activities to reach cease-fire, to lift the embargo, and to reach compromise inside Palestine," he said
        
"They welcomed our active participation in this process," Erdogan said. 

 

His special representative Ahmet Davutoglu had a meeting with Khaled Meshaal, a senior political leader of Hamas, in Syria, he also said when asked if Turkey would exert any efforts to settle problems between al Fatah and Hamas.

 

Turkey could step in to the brokerage talks, which is currently hold by Egypt, as well if the Arab League or Egypt asks, he also told reporters.

 

"We would do anything gladly to serve regional peace," he said.

 

Erdogan, who is scheduled to travel to Saudi Arabia on Saturday, later departed for Egypt on Thursday on the second leg of his diplomatic tour.
