Study room opened for visually impaired
ANKARA - Bilkent University’s disabled student unit and Alimnu have established a study room for visually impaired people in the university’s library.

The project aims to ease campus life for students with disabilities. Vice-chancellor of Bilkent University Kürþat Aydýn said buildings constructed after the year 2000 were all appropriate for disabled people. The study room for visually impaired students was a big project for them, Aydýn said. The students will be able to use computers, search for information and read books with the help of special scanners.

There are three visually impaired students at the university and two of them are blind. The study room will be open to everyone, including people from outside the university and people can access books from Bilkent University’s library.

An instructor in the Ýnönü University fine arts department, Yusuf Dumlupýnar, who is visually impaired, said nongovernmental organizations, or NGOs, had played a big role in providing technology for disabled people. Having learned how to use a computer by himself, Dumlupýnar said no one required special abilities to use a computer. The computer program "Jaws" assists disabled people to use computers with ease.
