ANTALYA - The 13th East Mediterranean International Tourism and Travel Fair, or EMITT, of primary importance in the tourism industry, is to be held at TÜYAP Beylikdüzü Fair and Convention Center from Feb. 12 to 15, 2009.

While precautions to be taken against the economic crisis in world markets are sought, the tourism industry has become a hot spot for economists from many countries. Countries tend to search for remedies to economic crises in the tourism industry, regarded by some as the only promising sector with a potential to trigger growth in 54 other industries.

Hosting many firms, travel agents, managers and entrepreneurs from the Mediterranean, Middle East, southeastern Europe and Asia, the EMITT will be organized by the Turkey Hotels Federation, TÜROFED and Turkey Tourism Investment Foundation, TYD.

"Of high importance in the world tourism industry, EMITT has become a hot spot, due to the crisis. This is obvious from the high demand. Last year we promised to make EMITT one of the five biggest tourism fairs in the world. This economic crisis has sped up the process, increasing growth by 20 percent. It is the first time such growth has been recorded by any tourism fair," said Hacer Aydın, fair director of Ekin Group.

"The increase in demand to participate in the fair shows the role tourism is playing in revitalizing the economy in a crisis environment," said Ahmet Barut, chairman of the Turkey Hotels Federation.

Stating that growth in the tourism industry despite the crisis was a result of unending investment, Murat Dedeman, chairman of Turkey Tourism Investments Foundation, said the crisis should not stop tourism investment.

One of the successes of the EMITT is in bringing the health and tourism industries together. The International Holiday and Health Summit Conference, managed by Dr. Yaşar Bilgin, chairman of German-Turk Health Foundation, and supported by Dr. Maria Böhmer, the Minister of State for Germany, is also part of EMITT and brings decision makers and trendsetters from the tourism and health industries together.

EMITT will start hosting guest countries this year. The first guest country will be Syria, with which Turkey has been developing relations for some time. Aside from activities for both professionals and consumers, Syria will also publicize its natural beauty and history.
