Eighteen people died when a truck carrying illegal immigrants veered off the road and rolled into a ditch in northwestern Turkey on Sunday, a local official told the Anatolia Agency (AA).

Twenty-three others were injured in the accident near the town of Malkara in the Tekirdag province, governor Aydin Nezih Dogan told AA.

Most of the victims were immigrants from Burma and officials are trying to identify them and that efforts were underway to assess the nationality of the illegal migrants, Dogan also said.
