AKP says it's up to rectors to lift or continue headscarf ban

An AKP official said it would be the rectors’ decision whether to lift or continue the ban on headscarf in the universities following the reports of in some universities female students with headscarves allowed in.

"This is up to the rectors' will. This is a law that can be implemented directly. If they want they can implement it. If they want they can wait for the legal procedure to complete. This is completely up to the rectors" said Bekir Bozdağ, AKP's deputy leader for parliamentary group.

According to the agreement AKP and nationalist MHP reached, the definition of the headscarf that will be allowed would be added to the law outlining the clothing procedure in the universities in order to prevent the misuse of the constitutional changes.

Turkish parliament overwhelmingly passed the bill on Saturday, but it needs to be endorsed by President Abdullah Gul before it comes into effect. Some female students were seen wearing the head scarves into classes at the southern university of Cukurova and on the campus of western Kocaeli University, media reports said.
