Istanbul University clarifies stance against AKP, MHP headscarf initiative

Rectors and faculty members are reacting strongly to efforts by the ruling AKP and opposition MHP parties to come up with proposals which would free up the wearing of headscarves in Turkish universities.
The latest outcry in protest to the proposed changes came from Istanbul University Rector Professor Mesut Parlak, who said to an assembled crowd of more than 1,000 academicians "If what we are talking about here is our nation, everything else is simply a detail." The meeting which took place yesterday at Istanbul University clarified the campus' official negative stance with regards to the efforts by the AKP and MHP.
