Necirvan Barzani, a top ranked leader in the northern Iraqi regional authority, has said that if Ankara were to apply to open up a consulate in the region, the Kurdish authorities there would be pleased to allow it.

Speaking with the Sarkulevsat newspaper, Barzani said yesterday "We would view such a step positively. We believe there have to be good relations with our neighboring countries." In the meantime, the regional Kurdish authority has declared the region of the country bordering Turkey a military zone, meaning that no journalists can enter, and that frequent check points are now a part of the general vista.
