Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul met yesterday with Iraqi Deputy President Adil Abdulmehdi, in talks that focused largely on the struggle against PKK forces in northern Iraq.

Gul reportedly reminded Abdulmehdi that even in the days of bad relations between Turkey and Syria, when former PKK head Abdullah Ocalan was residing in the Syrian capital Damascus, the Syrian administration had not allowed PKK propoganda on its television stations. This reminder, which Gul asked Abdulmehdi to pass on to Iraqi President Jelal Talabani, came in light of Ankara's newest anxiety over PKK use of television stations in northern Iraq to relay their messages. While Gul reiterated his request to the Baghad administration to prevent PKK presence and PKK use of media in Iraq, Abdulmehdi for his part reiterated Baghdad's insistance that Turkey not consider any military interference in northern Iraq. Said Abdulmehdi: "Neighboring countries must be respectful Iraq's sovereigty and independence."
