Kenan Evren calls the office of presidency in Turkey a "modern prison"
Kenan Evren, the former general who led the September 12 coup in Turkey, going on to be head of state for 3 years and president for 7 years, has called the office of president in Turkey "a high office but a modern prison."
Evren, speaking about Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's possible candidacy for the position, said "If it were me, I would not want to be president, I would prefer to be prime minister. Because the prime minister has the authority to execute decisions, while the president doesn't.'
Evren made his comments to the Izmir-based magazine Diva. In additions to comments about the office of presidency, Evren also touched on the "headscarf crisis" in Turkey, noting that he had warned former President Turgut Ozal about taking precautions, but that President Ozal had not listened sufficiently to him.
