While officials in the capital keep silent regarding the hanging of Iraq’s ousted dictator Saddam Hussein, some leaders are starting to speak out.

Tüzmen: He was prepared

Secretary of State Kürşad Tüzmen, who saw Saddam Hussein a short while before he was overthrown through military intervention, said that “Saddam knew what was coming. He was prepared. A new Lebanon is being formed in Iraq. A very troubled region is being formed at our borders.”

Baykal: It is upsetting

CHP (Republican Peoples’ Party) Leader Deniz Baykal said that he regarded the execution as “a sad indicator that political problems continue to be settled through death and killing. This is extremely saddening. Political conflicts should not be settled through execution.” Baykal went on to say, “I find it impossible to believe that those who struggled for years to abandon the death penalty in Turkey can be satisfied with this result.”
