Orhan Pamuk arrives back in Istanbul after receiving the Nobel
Turkish author Orhan Pamuk returned to Turkey yesterday evening from the Swedish capital Stockholm, where he was presented the 2006 Nobel Prize for Literature by the Royal Swedish Academy.
Said Pamuk yesterday "I did not receive this award for only myself. This is an award for the great Turkish culture, which has been built up over the years, for the Turkish language, and for Turkish literature." Pamuk was greeted by applause from citizens and flowers from Turkish Airlines hostesses when he landed yesterday evening at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport. In a statement to reporters waiting at the airport, Pamuk said "This award was given to a great tradition. I gave the speech to accept this award in Turkish, and with great pleasure....I am tired, but I am happy to experience the honor of bringing this award to my country, for the first time. I want to share this with the whole country, with all of Turkey."
