Greek Parliament approves bill on construction of mosque in Athens

The Greek Parliament yesterday approved a bill connected with the proposed construction of a mosque in Athens. Presenting the bill to the parliament was Greek Education and Religious Affairs Minister Maria Yannaku, who told parliament members that the construction of the mosque would be under government control.

Prior to the passage of the bill, members of the main opposition PASOK party stood their ground against two important articles in the bill, but their protest was defeated by members of other parties. According to the approved bill, the new mosque is to be built in Athen's central Votanikos neighborhood, and will be funded by the Greek government, and will be overseen by a 7 person commission that includes two Muslim members of Greek society, as well as 5 members of the government.
