Massive fire at Ataturk Airports cargo hold; much damage, no death

A fire which broke out in a customs cargo terminal yesterday at Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport spread quickly, due to a series of explosions and a strong northeasterly wind, threating passengers in the nearby departures terminal, and turning the area into a smoky, chaotic scene.

The flames first started at 15:15, growing quickly into a fire which would later turn the cargo areas into piles of smoking metal. Fire engines and ambulances arrived from points all over Istanbul on hearing the alarms, and special fire-planes scooped up water from the nearby Kucukcekmece Lake, dumping it as quickly as they could onto the flames. In the end, the fire was brought under control in 2 hours, though the effects were felt through the day, as traffic was affected, and local natural gas and electricity to the area of the city where the airport is were cut off as a precaution.

Though an email to the Firat News Agency from a group calling themselves the Kurdistan Freedom Hawks claimed responsibility for the fire, police have said that so far there is no evidence of sabotage.
