Reaction in the Turkish capital to the shocking murder of a high level judge from Turkey's highest administrative court, the Council of State, is continuing on all fronts. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday warned of reaction which would tie the event to the government's negative statements concerning an earlier decision from the Council of State on the legality of a teacher wearing a "turban" or headscarf on her way back and forth from school. Said Erdogan, "To bring this incident into connection with the headscarf, or with my voiced opinions in the run-up to elections is an ugly thing."

Erdogan warns: Let no one try to gain an advantage from this event

Speaking to reporters in a press conference yesterday, Erdogan answered questions on the incident in the capital, responding to the question: "Could there be a connection between the attack on the Council of State and the decision from that body on the pre-school teacher wearing the headscarf?" Said Erdogan: "No matter where this attack originates from, an attack on one of our republic's most important legal bodies is something no one can ever support.....But those who try to gain some advantage out of this event for their own purposes are doing nothing but harming Turkey." When asked by a Finnish reporter whether he thought his own negative reaction to the Council of State decision on the headscarved teacher might have had anything to do with current tension on the matter, Erdogan said "Those who are bringing up this idea are only trying to ruin Turkey's calm and tranquility. It is unacceptable. We stay far away from everything which will add tension to the society."
