Microsoft's head Bill Gates, who is in Istanbul for a meeting with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has said that he will "form a silicon valley" in Istanbul. PM Erdogan hosted a dinner in Gates' honor at the Dolmabahce Palace last night. At the dinner, Gates gave Erdogan information about his ideas for the "technopark" being planned for Umraniye, on the Asian side of the city. Gates also used the dinner as an opportunity to enquire of Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbas how work on the "technopark" site was going. Topbas assured him work was moving along.

In a speech given at the dinner, Erdogan noted that this was not Gates' first time in Turkey, and expressed the hope that Gates would see for himself the potential inherent in the Turkish work force for Microsoft. Gates, who is staying at the Ciragan Hotel in Istanbul, was spotted yesterday morning in a bakery in Bebek, wearing a baseball cap and a polar fleece jacket. Despite the coldness of the weather, he chose to eat his breakfast outside on the balcony, favoring a classic Turkish breakfast of tomatoes, olives, and cheese.
