The Supreme Court stated that the 20 year sentence Agca had already completed in Italy would not be taken off from his sentence for crimes committed in Turkey. Criminal Department 1 of the Supreme Court found that Mehmet Ali Agca’s release after only five-and-a-half years imprisonment - due to lightening of the sentence for the assassination of Abdi Ipekçi and armed robbery, as a result of his previous sentence in Italy for the attempted assassination of the Pope, was ‘wrong’, and broke it off with a unanimous vote
Çiçek referred case to Supreme Court
Minister of Justice, Cemil Çiçek had used the exceptional ‘written order’ to appeal to the Supreme Court regarding Agca’s disputed release.
