President of the Turkish Republic, Ahmet Necdet Sezer, has issued "no spouses invited" invitations to government ministers and MPs whose wives wear turbans for the "Republic Day Celebration" reception to be held at the Cankaya Presidential Palace on October 29.

According to information obtained by Hurriyet, President Sezer's invitations to Prime Minister Erdogan, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, and the many other members of the current administration's cabinet whose wives have covered heads were all specified as "single person" invitations. Apparently, government ministers Mehmet Aydin and Kursad Tuzmen, as well as National Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul and Labor Minister Murat Basesgioglu, all of whom are married to women who do not cover their heads, received invivations which are open to spouses. The single female member of PM Erdogan's cabinet, state minister Nimet Cubucku, also received an invitation for her spouse.
