All eyes turn to abuse at home in Turkey

This week's revelations from the Malatya Orphanage have turned all eyes in Turkey to the more general topic of violence within the family. Research carried out by the Turkish Republic Prime Ministerial Bureau on Families supports indictations that the physical and verbal abuse of children is not limited to orphanges, but occurs widely in families also.

Research from the Bureau on Families show that 34% of families experience some form of physical violence at home, while a full 53% say that verbal abuse is common. Within this framwork, 46% of children are thought to be at the receiving end of at least some of the violence at home, while 9% are the victims of sexual abuse.

According to the United Nations Children's Rights Agreement signed in 1994 in Turkey, children have, from birth, the right to live in a house not marked by violence. This is undermined by research which shows that in Turkey, small children over the age of 4 in particular are at the receiving end of physical abuse at home. Though studies show that 3% of the deaths of children between the ages of 1-4 are the result of violence in Turkey, the fact remains that much of the exploitation of children in the country is never made official.
