    Earthquake in Karliova

    The Prime Ministry Directorate General of Emergency Management said on Sunday that 16 people were slightly injured in the earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale which jolted Karliova town of eastern city of Bingol yesterday.

    Releasing a statement, the Directorate General said that the earthquake caused damage in 214 houses in Karliova and adjacent villages, and in Cat town of neighboring city of Erzurum.

    Turkish Red Crescent dispatched tents, blankets, foodstuff and other relief aid to the affected areas where some villages were cut off from the outside world due to heavy snowfall for days.

    Meanwhile, Health Minister Recep Akdag who rushed to the region after the quake, said that urgent requirements of residents in the region were met. 

    Interior Minister Abdulkadir Aksu and Public Works & Settlement Minister Zeki Ergezen are expected to visit the quake-stricken areas on Sunday.

    The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 hit the area at 09.36. a.m. on Saturday. It was felt in the neighboring cities of Erzurum, Diyarbakir, Tunceli, Mus and Erzincan.
