DEHAP and Free Party members launched a campaign throughout Turkey, led by the cities of Ankara, Istanbul, Adana, Diyarbakir, and Mersin, to change their names into Kurdish by appealing to court.

Ali Urkut, the DEHAP Deputy Chairman, said that everybody could bear names other than Turkish ones since EU Harmonization laws paved the way for such a practice. Urkut said that they would appeal to court to replace their names with Kurdish ones and that they did not accept the circular letter of the Interior Ministry that no name could include letters, which do not exist in Turkish alphabet, such as w, q, and x. Members of DEHAP and Free Party appealed to get names including these letters.
