French Foreign Minister Phillipe Douste-Blazy met with his Turkish counterpart, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, yesterday in Ankara. The two met alone at first, after which Turkish and French delegations sat down together. Main subjects for discussion were Cyprus and public opinions in both France and Turkey on Turkey's potential entrance into the EU.

Douste-Blazy underlined the importance placed by France on the opening of air and sea ports by Turkey to Greek Cypriot useage. The French FM also clarified that the official French stance is that the Cyprus matter should ultimately be solved within the framework of the UN body.
For his part, FM Gul also stressed that Ankara wishes for a solution to the Cyprus problem, but reminded Douste-Blazy that it could not be "a one way street." He also noted that the EU should press the Greek Cypriots for an answer as to "why there are no solutions that seem to forthcoming from them." Gul noted that with no solution to the problem, Cyprus would continue to be a "headache" for the whole EU until solved.
