According to reliable sources, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has issued an invitation to visit Washington, DC to President of the Northern Cypriot Turkish Republic, Mehmet Ali Talat. The invitation was reportedly carried recently to Talat by US Charge d'Affaires in Nicosia, Jane Zimmerman.

There has been no date clarified as yet for the visit, though one is expected to emerge from upcoming meetings between Talat and Douglas Silliman, the US State Department's Deputy Director of Southern European Affairs. Talat is himself reported to be less than excited about a visit to the US State Department "simply shake the hand of the Secretary of State," as he describes waiting for "concrete steps" from the US on having isolationary measures against Cyprus lifted. Talat has expressed the hope that a meeting in Washington, DC would have lasting and deeper implications for Northern Cyprus.
There is speculation that a visit by President Talat to the US State Department would leave the White House, facing mid term elections, up against an angered Greek-Cypriot lobby.
