The head turban which caused an enormous uproar when it was worn in the Turkish Parliament in 1999 by former Fazilet Party female MP Merve Kavakci is now one of the items on display in an exhibition sponsored by the European Security and Cooperation Commission in the US Senate Russell building in Washington, DC. The name of the exhibition, which closes on October 28, is "Body of Belief." The show features symbolic pieces of clothing and other items which manifest people's beliefs, but which may be banned for one reason or another in certain places in different countries.

Along with Kavakci's head turban, other references to Turkey in the "Body of Belief" show include a photograph of Kavakci crying, as well as a Turkish policeman's daughter removing her turban, and a turban which belonged to a Turkish girl killed in a car accident.
Former MP Kavakci reportedly never wore the turban which sparked the outcry in the Turkish Parliament again after that day. It has only reappeared again for the "Body of Belief" show in Washington, DC.
