Following the denial of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan with regards to the interview published by German daily Welt am Sontag, the Premier has demanded to learn from his adviser Cuneyd Zapsu "who allowed the conversation between himself and German Journalist Joseph Keese be printed". If there was such an interview "why was there no tape recording of it?"

After the interview between Keese of Welt am Sontag, and Erdogan on Jan. 28 during their informal chat at a lunch in Davos, Erdogan denied what had been said. Then Erdogan called his adviser Zapsu, who had approved the interview for publishing, and asked him “Why was this interview not recorded?” In the interview, Erdogan was quoted as saying that his party carried out work "to remove the headscarf ban".

According to Erdogan’s press Counselor Ahmet Tezcan, “Zapsu had overlooked the fact that Erdogan had said in that conversation “We can approve this sentiment of removing the headscarf ban providing that it receives social consensus.”

In defense Keese said, “We were together with Erdogan at a luncheon in Davos. We had a 20-minute break there and I asked the Prime Minister "how is the mood in Germany towards Turkey?" and he replied that his daughters "receive criticism for wearing the headscarf and are being educated abroad for this reason"."
