An autopsy carried out in Southern Cyprus has revealed that the death of military attache Thomas Mooney, who had been reported missing from the US Embassy for four days prior to the discovery of his body in a wooded area outside Nicosia, was due to suicide.

The autopsy, carried out by Southern Cypriot doctor and MP to the European Parliament Marios Matsakis, showed that Mooney died due to the massive breakage in the main artery through his neck, which he apparently cut himself using a razor.

A statement issued by the US Embassy in Nicosia yesterday declared that Mooney's death had nothing to do with either politics or security, but was a "personal tragedy." Also found alongside Mooney's body were a CD of indisclosed material, and a suicide note.
In an additional interesting note, Mooney had been a graduate from the Istanbul Land Forces Military Academy, and had been known as a speaker of quite good Turkish, and in general, a "friend to Turks."
