Austrian newspapers gave close attention to the last minute softening of the Austrian EU stance against potential Turkish membership in the organization. Many newspapers carried columns explaining that the US had come to the rescue of Turkey, with the not-subtle accusation that the Austrian EU front had stretched out its neck and sacrificed itself to the wider interests of other EU countries. Austrian Prime Minister Wolfgang Schussel's statement on Austrian state television that first the Austrian Parliament and then the Austrian people should have given permission for a Turkish memberhship were also covered widely in the press. Some headlines from Austrian newspapers:Kurier newspaper: Horror film TurkeyDer Standart newspaper: Austria stood alone in demanding privileged partnership for TurkeyDie Presse newspaper: Vienna played a risky game and won. Austria was the only European country to bravely speak of its peoples' objection to a Turkish EU membership
